About the Database of LCAs in England
In September 2004, the Countryside Agency requested the assistance of Local Authorities, National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and other organisations in creating a new database of Landscape Character Assessments (LCAs) in England. The aim of the project was to provide an ongoing record of LCA information and data for all those applying a landscape character approach in their work. It was also intended to help increase the awareness and overall use of LCA and to allow for relevant local information to be more easily located.
The project was funded by the Countryside Agency, with work being undertaken by Countryscape, in partnership with Diacono Associates and the Department of Landscape at the University of Sheffield.
The resulting database serves as a resource for those involved in landscape planning, planning policy and development control, sensitivity and capacity studies, biodiversity action planning and urban design. Furthermore, the data collected is invaluable to land managers and their advisors, providing background information for applications under new agri-environment schemes.
From a national perspective, the database helps the Countryside Agency to build a 'big picture' of LCAs that can ultimately be used by national agencies (including the future Integrated Agency), regional and local government and anyone with an interest in LCA and its applications.
This section includes an online data collection tool, which guides you through the process in a series of convenient, 'bite-sized' chunks. This tool allows you to add data at your convenience through a password protected login system. In addition, it allows you to return to the database to add further data, thereby allowing you to complete your entry at a pace which fits into your working day. This system will also enable you to keep your data up-to-date. All data will be collected in a form compatible with e-Government standards, which will ensure maximum usability and future-proofing of this valuable resource.
The Countryside Agency recognises your contribution to this important project as being both highly valued and vital to its success. Your help and input in ensuring good quality and current information is therefore essential to the long-term sustainability of the database.
